New research on dyslexia looks promising

Newhouse again: A pioneering study published in the **Proceedings of the National Academies of Science** looks at a technique invented by Paula Tallal, Professor Neuroscience at Rutgers. John Gabriele, a Stanford neuroscientist, approached Tallal after reading about her work. For Tallal, it was an opportunity to gain independent verification of her work. Researchers showed 20 dyslexic children and 12 with normal reading abilities two different letters of the alphabet on flash cards and asked them if they rhymed. At the same time, the children's brains were scanned with a noninvasive MRI. The brains of the dyslexic children were found to be inactivated on the left, language-critical side of the brain. Next, those children used the computer program invented by Tallal for eight weeks, five days a week, 100 minutes each day. They learned to process and interpret the rapid sequent of sounds within words by slowing them down and exaggerating them. At the close of the training, bran scans were done again. The scans of the two groups were similar.
