Gates Foundation Gives $4 million to UC

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is donating four million dollars to the University of California to help plan a systemwide school focusing on global health issues. The proposed school would consist of centers on different campuses focusing on issues such as infectious disease, climate change and food security. The school’s final plans are expected to be ready for consideration by the Board of Regents in 2010, with enrollment possibly beginning in 2011.

COSMOS 2009

We described the California State Summer Math and Science to our readers in this newsletter last year: it’s a systemwide program. This year, on its website, applicants are again invited to apply. If you’re interested, act quickly: the deadline is March 15th. The program is designed specifically for talented and motivated high school students. It’s a 4-week residential summer program open to entering ninth through exiting twelfth-grade high school students with demonstrated interest and achievement in math and science.

This is intended to encourage the most motivated kids to continue their interest in these fields. Located on four University of California campuses (Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz), COSMOS provides students with an unparalleled opportunity to work side-by-side with outstanding university faculty and researchers, covering topics extending beyond the typical high school curriculum.

COSMOS at UCSD will place a strong emphasis on technology and engineering, in addition to mathematics and science, and will be administered through the Jacobs School of Engineering.
