California Fees Go Up Again

The San Francisco Examiner recently reported the increase in fees affecting the California State University system and the University of California system. CSU fees will now be $2,300. UC system fees may vary slightly from campus to campus. At UC Berkeley they are $4465.74. As we have reported here, private institutions like Stanford, Harvard, and Dartmouth are working hard right now to attract top students from middle-income families. Students might want to look carefully at the trade-offs.

Adult Education's Getting Better All the Time

Probably because of its low profile, nobody pays much attention to Adult Education. It doesn't sell newspapers so it's not worth reporting. Yet in this century perhaps no facet of California education has seen such expansion. It is all over the Bay Area, it is high quality, and it is available to everyone. So if you're out of touch, don't miss the run down at KQED's Adult Learning Resource Guide. I think you'll be surprised.

New Web Site for Students Abroad

The New York Times reports there is a new website for students abroad. It's maintained by the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs to promote smart, safe travel. The information includes what to do in case of a natural disaster; contact information for crime victims; travel alerts; a wallet card to fill out with emergency contacts; directions and deadlines for passports and visas; and how to vote in U.S. elections from abroad.
