Accommodating Learning Disabilities and ADHD

A new series a the main public library (100 Larkin at Grove) is generating interest. The identification of students with learning disabilities and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is on the increase, and although there is plenty of information available, families can use a helping-hand getting access to it. A series of programs is scheduled, jointly sponsored by the public library, the school district, and Schwab Learning. All are held on the library's lower level, and all are free of charge.

Saturday, October 19th from 2:00 to 4:30, Steven Corelis facilitated a free workshop for teachers and parents to discuss:

Challenges to the student (processing, attending, listening, producing) Student response to challenges (withdrawal, acting-out, inappropriate behavior) What the law says (Section 504, Individual Education Plans) Accommodations, strategies, and compensations.

The program was well-attended by both teachers and parents. Some people had been present at an earlier program at Schwab Learning which had shown a video simulating the frustrations of students with visual-processing and auditory-processing deficits. Participants were highly recommending the video. It can be borrowed from your local Parents Helping Parents group (415-841-8820); or Schwab can be invited to show it at your school.

Other recommended resources include **Seven Kinds of Smart** by Thomas Armstrong, **Keys to Parenting a Child with LD**, **Keys to Parenting a Child with ADD** both by Barry McNamara, and **Seven Steps to Homework Success** by Sydney Zentall.

Stephen Corelis is an Educational Therapist. He was, for 20 years, a K-8 Special Ed teacher in the public schools. He is now in private practice in San Jose: Educational Therapy Services, (408) 993-1794 or email scorelis [at] infi [dot] net.
